The Fort Collins Art Festival

November 15th, 2007 by Daryle Dickens

Ah the Fort Collins Art Festival, that great time of year when the city’s artists show off their work to the community and the nation. People of all types come out to see art and meet artists. Discoveries are made, deals are struck, connections begin, and inspiration is in the air. And all those people from around the country who travel here to visit our city for it’s well known art, doing a little shopping in Old Town, and touring a brewery or two. The weekend is always a good time and quite a gem on the landscape of Fort Collins’ culture.

Hey wait a minute… There is no Fort Collins Art Festival. Sure we have a few events around where artists can rent a booth such as New West Fest. But there is no weekend that is accessible to artists of all levels and people in any tax bracket that really brings out and showcases the art community in Fort Collins. No one time people from around the world could come to Fort Collins and know they would see what we have to offer when it comes to art.

I am not complaining. I am starting dialogue to create change. I believe all the people of Fort Collins would benefit from a city wide Art Festival.

What do you think? Leave a comment and let us all know.

I was getting all excited as I read this, and was wondering why I had never heard of it. Then I got to the end and realized why I had never heard of it. How can we make it happen? I know for a fact that there are enough artists. I heard Ft Collins was the #7 city in the nation for artists to live! Who knows enough about permits and registrations and planning to make it happen? I’m a full-time artist so I will get involved in any way I can. Let’s do it!

It would be fantastic to have an arts festival here. There are so many artists of all kinds in Fort Collins. It would be nice to have a way to showcase all of that…painting, sculpture, metalsmithing, pottery, fiber arts, etc. Please let me know how I can get involved. This might be one to look at for inspiration. http://www.artsfestival.net/artsfestival/ I always enjoyed going to that one both to view and buy art and jewelry and gifts. I agree with Bryan C….let’s do it!

I would suggest approaching the Downtown Business Association. They are the ones that coordinate the events in Old Town Square. Their contact info is 19 Old Town Square, Suite #230,
Phone: 970.484.6500. I too would like to see more of a focus on local artists at New West Fest or an entire festival devoted just to the wealth of local artists.

It would have to something really unique or spectacular.

Check out what going in Florida with Art Basel Miami Beach – the largest contemporary art fair in the hemisphere, bringing for the sixth year a whirlwind of international art collectors, respected curators, museum directors and some of the world’s most distinguished artists and galleries…

Miami itself becomes a work of art: http://www.miamiherald.com/457/story/328615.html
