In recent months I’ve heard a lot of questions from artists about Twitter. Mostly from people who are interested but do not know where to start when it comes to Twitter. And of course the question of “why would I join Twitter?” So I decided to right a little e-book to help out those who have not ventured into Twitter’s waters but are curious.

Let me say this from the get go, I am not one who will ever say “You have to be on Twitter!” I would not say that about anything. It is important to investigate tools and decide if they fit into your process as a working artist. The closest thing I have to a “have to” is a quality website. These days it is really good for people to be able to find you and your work online in a place you own all your pixels. But I digress, that is a topic for another post.

Today I’d like to introduce to to Twitter Primer for Artists:

It is a very basic book that covers the fundamentals of Twitter, from creating your account, to terminology, and finally optimizing your account. Think of it as a “getting started manual” for Twitter.

If you are someone who has been thinking about Twitter I suggest reading the book to help you decide if Twitter is right for you. Bottom line is that Twitter can help you connect with people anywhere in the world. And also Twitter is a lot of fun. If you do read it please let me know what you think. What did I miss? Was any part of it confusing? What parts did you wish I had gone more in depth with? What typos did my editor miss? How awesome is it?

And this is just the first in a series of books I will putting out over the coming weeks to help artists navigate the internet. Let me know what topic should be added to the list.

This post is a continued palaver on Trent Reznor’s advice to unknown musicians. The first post can be found here.

Trent’s next bit of advice is this:

“The Beastie Boys’ site offers everything you could possibly want in the formats you would want it in – available right from them, right now. The prices they are charging are more than you should be charging – they are established and you are not. Think this through.”

There are a few things any artist can take from that statement. Options are something I see a lot of creative folks overlooking, especially visual artists such as painters and photographers. Give your fans many ways and many price points to collect what your creating. Offer very small prints, artist trading cards, sketches, and anything else you can think of that gets your art in more people’s homes. And offer all these through your website or blog as well as art shows and galleries. This does not devalue your art in any way. If anything it creates more value for your original work. And if someone can walk away from your showing with a $5 postcard of your art they are going to remember you and your work more than the artist in the booth next to yours who had no such offerings.

His next point about pricing is a tough one for many artists especially those just beginning to sell to the public. “Think it through,” is very good advice. Pricing is tricky for sure and there is no one piece of advice that can be offered on this subject. So much depends on your medium, your experience, how much you have sold, the current market, and even the part of the globe you live in. A good strategy that has worked for me is to start lower than I would like but raise prices with each sale. This works to build interest while getting your work in people’s hands.

What are your thoughts on pricing art? Please leave a comment and share what works for you. Especially tell us about what methods you used when you were just starting out.

True story.

This morning I opened our local newspaper to be greeted with headlines of another art gallery closing. Based on the many Google Alerts I have running this is common news all over the country and the world. The current economy is just too weak for many art galleries to survive.

Of course this is bad news for the gallery owner who is trying to make a living, but it is also very bad news for artists. As galleries close artists have less and less space to display and sell their work. I know many who see this as a time to despair and a time to give up on trying to make it as an artist. The economy is just too slow and too weak for an artist to survive. I hope you don’t think like that because I have some good news for artists working today.

It just keeps getting easier and more cost effective to sell your art online. Your destiny as an artist and your ability to sell your work is 100% in your hands. But it is not without challenges.

The challenge lies in navigating and managing all of the options that are available to you online. There are so many things you could do that it is easy to get overwhelmed and give up on the idea of selling your work via the internet. Which is why I have more good news for you, Art Palaver is going to focus 100% on helping you sell your art online.

This post is just a teaser of things to come and changes that on the way for this site. It will remain a blog but I will be adding many more features and programs that are going to enable you to sell your art which is going to enable you to keep making art. I spend most of my time emerged in the internet and social media. Now I am going to start focusing and sharing what I learn here on Art Palaver so that artists like yourself can be successful.

This will be for all creative types from visual artists, to musicians, to writers, photographers and anyone else creating art.

Like I said this is just a teaser. Stay tuned.

Being represented by a gallery can be nice but in the age of the internet many artists are selling their own art and keeping more of the profit. Cartfly.com is a place that makes that easier.

Cartfly lets you create what they call a portable store front that you can place on website, blogs, and other internet outlets. Basically a display of what you have for sale and how much it is. The service is free to set-up, in fact they don’t even charge a listing fee. There is just a simple 3% transaction fee. But Cartfly uses PayPal so any fees associated with PayPal must be factored as well.

I know a few artists who are using it and they speak very highly of it. Head on over to Cartfly.com and see if it is right for your art business.
