The email newsletter is probably one of the oldest internet tools available for an artist to promote their art. They have been around since the invention of email. Many artists send out “email blasts” through their email client like Gmail or Hotmail. Cutting and pasting a list of emails into the “To:” box and hitting send. This is the easiest method and it is free. It is also illegal.

Yes I said illegal. You see when you send out an email like that 9 out of 10 times it does not conform to the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. The biggest reason for non compliance is there is no easy way to opt out of the emailings. To comply with the CAN-SPAM act the professional artist will turn to an email service to handle their mass mailings.

There are a few to choose from but only 1 that I know of that lets you run a list of under 500 addresses for free, that service is MailChimp. I’ve been using MailChimp for six months now and I highly recommend it to any artist looking to have an easy to use professional email service.

That’s really all I got for you today. If you’ve been thinking about using email to market your work start with MailChimp.

To help launch the new newsletter I am giving away a custom website, a domain name, and a year of hosting. Anyone who signs up for the free newsletter between September 1st, 2009 and 11:59PM on October 4th, 2009 is eligible to win. (Please note that this is strictly for an artist website.)

Click here to sign up now!

If you are the lucky winner you will receive…

Your own unique domain name (1 year)

1 year of free hosting

A custom built website

The details…

Unique domain name – Art Palaver will provide you with the first year contract of an available domain name of your choosing. This must be on a domain name that is currently unregistered and available for retail purchase. This does NOT include a domain that is being sold or auctioned by a private party. The purchase price of this domain is limited to $10 or less. This domain will be in your name and you are responsible for the domain fees after the 1 year is up.

1 year of free hosting – Art Palaver will provide the hosting space for your website on a shared server for one year. After the year is up you have the option to move to your own host or enter into a contract with Art Palaver for continued hosting for a fee.

A custom built website and or blog – Your website will be built on a WordPress platform. It can have up to 5 pages and a blog. The site will be custom built to fit your needs in both form and function within the parameters of WordPress and Art Palaver’s developer theme. (This just means that it will be custom but there are limitations.) Your website will come with up to 10 email addresses that correlate with your domain name as well.

Your site will also be full of goodies to help you and your art be seen on the internet. Things like search engine optimization, Google analytics, and an array of plug-ins to boost the function and performance of your site. And of course it will be integrated with any social media service you are using.

This give-a-way is only for the development of a website to promote an artist or art. This includes artists of all types from painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, musicians, potters, dancers, and anyone else working in a creative discipline. This give-a-way is for an individual only.

But wait there’s more…

You will also have a year of email support from Art Palaver in the maintenance and promotion of your new site. This will cover any questions you have in relation to your site whether it has to do with the function or how best to promote it, Art Palaver will be there waiting for your emails. (When I build a site I don’t want to just hand over the keys to the new owner, I also want to help that new owner win races.)

The Bottom Line…

By simply signing up for a monthly newsletter you have the chance to win a kick ass website to promote you and your art. (And when I say “monthly” newsletter I mean it. By signing up for this newsletter you will only receive a single email once a month, no more, no less.) This whole package has a street value of $720.00 American!

Ask them in the comment form or contact me directly.

The Good

Currently there are 3 ways to get the content I put up here on Art Palaver. The obvious way is to directly visit www.artpalaver.com and the other two ways involve using Art Palaver’s RSS feed. If you use an RSS reader then you can get these posts delivered directly to your reader. And if you’re not in the habit of using a reader you can sign up to have every post delivered to your inbox. But I know for many people these methods are not ideal.

The Bad

Directly visiting a site either involves always typing in the domain name or bookmarking the domain. Typing in the domain name involves the challenge of remembering the domain especially when people like me use strange and seldom used words like palaver. And bookmarking comes with organization challenges, it can be hard to keep all those sites you like straight in your browser.

I think an RSS reader is great but I know many people just see it as another thing they have to check when they sit down at their computer. Which is just one of the many reasons RSS readers go unused by the masses.

The RSS email option I know is the best for many but it has its downsides too. If a blog has a high posting frequency that can mean a lot of emails hitting your inbox. And the pressure to read everyone of those emails can often cause people to reach for the unsubscribe button.

Seeking Balance

All this gives me reason to offer another option, the monthly email newsletter. This option offers just the highlights from the previous month on Art Palaver as well as a few extras that will only be found in the newsletter. And to kick off the launch of the monthly Art Palaver newsletter I am going to give away an artist web presence package that includes a domain name, custom blog/website, as well as a year of hosting to any artist that signs up for the newsletter in the month of September. I’ll have all the details of that give-a-way in a separate post.

So click here to sign up now or use the form on ArtPalaver.com.

Live to create,

P.S. There are actually many ways to keep up with this blog or any blog using tools like Twitter and social bookmarking. But that is for a post on another day.
