Your going to be hearing this a lot from me here on Art Palaver, as an artist you need to work on building a fan base first, then worry about selling your art. No matter what medium you work in, you can and should develop a fan base, a group of people who really care about you and your work. So much so that they will give you money to enable you to continue doing your work. Usually in trade for your art but musicians are learning a new way to get money from fans.

Recently, Marketplace, the Public Radio Show by American Public Media that is all about money did a short piece on musician Jill Sobule. Kai Ryssdal talked to Jill because fans gave her $85,000 simply because she asked for it. She wanted to raise her own funds so she could produce her own album and not use a record label. In return for their money she offered fans everything from a free digital download of the album ($10), to singing on the album with Jill ($10,000). And yes she had someone donate $10,000. This is an example of fans coming together to support an artist.

Here is the interview:
marketplace_jillsobul_interview.mp3

You can also find the text of the interview here.

Have you thought about your fan base? And when I say fan base I am not talking about that list of names in the book you’ve been setting out at galleries and shows. I am talking about the group of people you’ve made a connection with and who care about your work. The ones that get excited when they see you have a new blog post or an email from you lands in their inbox. Do you have those? If not don’t worry. I’ll help you get them.

Way back in 2005 I started a webzine called ZAF622. The online magazine published Q&A style interviews with local artists. Which meant artists living in and around Fort Collins Colorado. This blog is a spin off of ZAF622. Art Palaver started local as well but grew beyond the borders of Fort Collins, beyond the borders of the United States in fact.

The project that is ZAF622 continue to evolve as I morph it into an internet show. A show that I am taking on the road. One of my major goals with ZAF622 is to do stories in and from all 50 states. I want to meet more artists and find out what they are up to and share it with the world.

ZAF622 is also going to expand beyond artists. Though I have not nailed down what that looks like exactly I do know I want to also feature causes. Most I imagine will be in the form of small non profits but could also include personal stories of people who need help. Bottom line though ZAF622 will always be about people as it has always been. I believe there is more to learn about art by focusing on the artist. And there is more to learn about life by focusing on people.

These past few months have been about putting the pieces in place to launch this crazy idea of mine. And now that things are starting to come together I am working on getting the word out. Because I want this project to be very inclusive. I want to get as many people involved in as many ways as possible. Again I do not know exactly what that looks like, but we’ll figure it out.

Don’t be afraid to email me if you know of an artist working in the U.S. you would like to see featured. Or if your an artist working in the U.S. just raise your hand and say, “Over here!”

ZAF622 and Art Palaver have grown apart over the years but this project is going to bring them closer again. I’ll be keeping you updated on the show. Look for the first episode in January 2009.
