Marketing and selling art is not why you are an artist. You are an artist because you want to create, because you posses an urge to express yourself. But creating art requires resources. Materials, money, and time top the list. Selling your work is a way to get those resources.

Art Palaver’s mission is to be a resource of knowledge and tools for artists looking to better marketing and promote themselves and their work. One means to that end is to build a community of artists around this site so that we can learn from each other and support each other. A few months ago I began hosting free live webinars every week to help with that community building. The live event allows for some dialogue so that I can hear back directly from you and learn what challenges you are facing. The featured artist column is also a way to build community. Through the article we learn a bit about an artist and what life is like for them.

And now I present to you The Modern Day Artist Podcast as yet another community building tool. Each podcast will feature a different artist as well as tips and advice on promoting and selling your work. There will also be interviews with those working in the art industry who have insight on how an artist can be more successful.

If you are not familiar with podcasting it simply means an audio file (usually MP3) broadcast via an RSS feed. You can either listen to them directly in this article, on iTunes, or by downloading the file. You are able to load the show onto any MP3 player and listen when convenient. I have been a fan of podcasting for years and I am excited to bring the format to Art Palaver on a regular basis.

Simple and easy search engine optimization practices can help fans find you and your artist website.

Each week I host a free weekly webinar to help you sell more art. Each webinars contain about 20 minutes of content and end with a live Q&A session. If you can’t make the live event the audio recording and slides are available for free afterward.

The next webinar is on SEO practices for artists.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it basically means taking steps so that search engines can find your information when people search for it. Are you an oil painter that specializes in painting bumblebees? Would you come up in Google is I search for “bumblebee oil painting”? I would hope so.

I’ll talk about the small steps you can take to improve the SEO for your site so those people interested in your artistic niche will find you when the search the web. Usually it is just a matter of tweaking the things you are already doing. And a lot of what I teach is lessons I have learned the hard way. But since I started taking these small steps I watched my traffic quickly increase.

If you are investing in an online presence for you art then you want traffic. There are two basic ways to get traffic. 1)Pay for it with ads. 2)Optimize your site to be found my search engines. For most of us SEO is the cost effective way to go.

Please join me for the live event and bring you questions. And as always if you have issues you want me to address you can leave questions in the comment form of this post.

Selling art online is a very charged topic. Many artists try it and give up, many artists don’t try at all, and many artists do very well at it. I believe a big aspect of promoting and marketing yourself as an artist on the internet is the mentality you have going into it.

Some classic mentalities I will cover include the “build it and they will come” mentality. Or the ever popular “buy my stuff” mentality. And one that seems to be special with artists, the “my stuff is too expensive to sell online” mentality, just to name a few. As many an athlete will tell you your success or failure when entering an arena can depend greatly on your mindset when you step on the field. It is no different for the artist looking to promote him or herself on the internet.

This will be a more active webinar where I hope to hear more from you and what is in your head. How do you feel about promoting and selling your work online? Because of that format I am limiting the number of attendees to only 10 artists. This we can have a better discussion and learn from each other.

This is a bit of an experiment but if it proves effective it just means I’ll host more webinars with smaller audiences to try and boost the information sharing.

Ever notice in life you have to make appointments for the things you don’t want to do but need to get done? Things like doctor & dentist appointments, taxes with your accountant, or taking your car to the mechanic. Putting these tasks on the calendar ensure that they get done whether we want to do them or not. Marketing your artwork is no different.

I am quite aware that there are very few artists that like the idea of marketing and promotion, this is why you procrastinate and put it off. And the habit of putting off your marketing means that it is not effective marketing. And of course that means that you sell less art. There is a simple solution to this marketing challenge all artist face and that is a marketing schedule.

Step One: Create a marketing plan.

Step Two: Schedule your marketing based on your plan.

Step Three: Faithfully execute the plan in accordance with your schedule.

Step Four: Smile. You are selling more art!

Maybe step 0.5 should be scheduling time to create your marketing plan. Write it down in your calendar and create a way to add a little sugar to the medicine. By that I mean make a date with yourself to go out to a coffee shop or another favorite place where you can sit down with your thoughts to draft a plan to market your art. Better yet grab a friend who is also an artist and create each other’s marketing plan together. This is the perfect time of year to do it.

Now that you have your plan it is time to get out your calendar and make a schedule of when each step in the plan will be executed. Create deadlines for yourself. When does that postcard need mailed? How often will the newsletter go out? What galleries will your approach and when? What days will you post to your blog? I bet a lot of these types of things are on your “to do list.” Right? But trust me a “to do schedule” is a lot more effective than a list.

Post your schedule where you will see it everyday. Use what ever system works for you. I write my schedule in my marketing journal and also enter deadlines in Google calendar. That way I get an email a week before a deadline. Which can come in handy when I have not thought to open my journal in a few days because it is rare for a day to go by that I don’t open my email. Post it in your work space or on your desktop, put it someone where you’ll constantly see it. Keeping your schedule at the top of your mind will help you meet the deadlines you created for yourself.

If you create a plan, schedule that plan, and execute the plan, you will sell more art.

I know that even creating the plan can be a challenge, which is why I’ve got some webinars to help you with all aspects of marketing your art. Check them out here.

Live to create,

This post is part of the discussion “How Do I Price My Art?” A common question for any new artist working in any medium. Often it is the last thought given to the idea of selling art. Here we are going to bring up some ideas and some ways on how an artist new to selling art can begin to price their art.

Contractors and tradesmen are familiar with the term “time and material.” It is when a job is priced out based on the amount of time it took to complete along with the cost of materials involved. For many new artists this is a good place to start when thinking about pricing their art.

Let’s cover materials first. Because you always want to make sure your materials are covered. This applies even to artist who really don’t like the idea of making money with their art. (I know your out there.) Even if your not seeking a profit you want to make enough to buy more materials to continue in your work. This requires paying attention or recording your expenses and how much went into the work you want to sell. Think about how much that canvas, clay, or photo paper cost. That will give you a foundation for your pricing. It is the beginning of making your work sustainable.

Time is a bit more tricky. Because you must determine how much your time is worth. How much is an hour of your working time worth? The more experience you have the more valuable your time is. If you are just beginning as an artist, or have never sold art and you are new to a market, you have not built up value yet. So even though you may have spent hours working on a piece you will have a difficult time demanding a high price for it.

Think of it as your internship into the art world. Your gaining experience and your meeting people but your not getting paid very well. This can be hard for an artist that is stepping into the world of selling their art. You see the dollar amount other work has next to it and you want the same. When you starting it is more important to get the sale.

A sale will do so much for you as a new artist. First it begins to hush that little voice in your head that is telling you you have no business selling art. Second it just feels good. It is a nice feeling when someone likes something that you created enough to pay you for it. And practically it means you have money to buy more materials to create more art..

This is how it starts. Small. Like so many things in life. But as you start to sell you can also start to raise you prices. You can do this because you have more experience. And if you selling that means you have demand, and demand equals value.

Keep in mind these are not rules. These are ideas. No two artists are the same. And this discussion is not for artists working with a gallery. A good gallery will help you with your pricing.

I believe when your starting out it is important to cover the cost of your supplies and to get the sale. Everything else will grow from that.

What do you believe?

For this series of posts we are going to be talking about the process of selling your art for the first time.

You have been making your art for some time now but you have never displayed it anywhere. Then one day while grabbing a latte you see art up in your local coffee shop. On a whim you ask the manager how an artist goes about getting their art displayed in the shop. To your surprise she says next month she has a need for new art and offers you the chance to hang your stuff. In a moment of excitement you say you’d love to hang your art in the coffee shop.

Then as your getting ready for your first public display of art you realize you have to come up with a price for your art. The some strange and weird feeling creeps over you as you think about pricing your work. You’ve never had to put a price on your art and the thought of it is a bit scary. Relax. Through the process of asking yourself some questions and giving yourself some honest answers it is not that hard for an artist that is just getting started to price their art.
