You can now find me at www.twitter.com/DaryleDickens or @DaryleDickens. I have been on Twitter for over a year now but decided to create a separate account just for this blog. My plan is to be selective about who I follow and only focus on connecting with artists who use Twitter. After further review I have decided that I do not want to try and maintain two accounts.

These days Twitter is the shiniest object to drop in the murky waters of the internet. Recently it has reached a tipping point and has been experiencing huge growth. This has tons of folks scrambling to make money from Twitter, by writing books about Twitter, creating webinars and classes, writing software that will give you more followers, the list goes on and on. It also has a ton of folks scratching their head about Twitter. Which leads us to the real question for this palaver is how can Twitter help an artist?

First and for most it can help you connect with people that you would otherwise never be able to connect with. Imagine your at a sold out event in a huge staduim that seats hundreds of thousands of people. All of them conversing with those around them. Now imagine your able to search those conversation or hear when specific words or topics are spoken. Then imagine you are able to instantly move next to people who are conversing about something you are interested in or can help with and join their conversation. That is one way you can view Twitter.

If your an artist who blogs (and you should be) Twitter is another place to share your blog postings. Another outlet for your feed.

And the thing that I don’t hear people willing to admit is that Twitter is just fun. It is a fun distraction. It is easy to get caught up in the stream and jump from one link to another. Or to throw out random thoughts and see who responds.

I want to end by saying that you don’t have to be on Twitter, which is something I hear people saying these days. If your curious check it out. Sign up, follow some people, spout your random nuggets of wisdom, wit, and insight and see what happens. And don’t worry about how many followers you do or don’t have. If you keep tweating they will come.

I’d love to hear from artist who have Twitter experience. Please comment on how you use it and how it has or hasn’t helped your art.

We all wonder what tools other artists use. Especially artists that we like. I know when I visit another artist’s studio I can’t help but look around at their studio to take a peek at their tools. What brands do they use? Do they buy the expensive stuff or the cheap stuff? What unusual tools does the artists use? We can learn a lot through other people’s experience.

The blog “The Tools Artists Use,” is showing us just what tools other artists use. The bulk of the blog is interviews with artists that focus on the instruments they use to create their art.

The blog was started by Bill Turner who was inspired by the Comic Tools blog and the book An Illustrated Life.

“With the Comic Tools weblog now focusing more on comic art tutorials, I felt that a site focusing on what’s used in creating art was missing. Plus, I want to include artists of all kinds and not just comic artists. I’m always curious what types of pens or paints or paper that other artists are using to create their art. Whether the artist is a self-taught notebook doodler or a RISD-trained professional illustrator, the process of creating art fascinates me.”

If you too are curious about the tools other artists use head over to http://thetoolsartistsuse.com/ and satisfy your curiosity. You can also contribute your own interview to the site by clicking here.
