True story.

This morning I opened our local newspaper to be greeted with headlines of another art gallery closing. Based on the many Google Alerts I have running this is common news all over the country and the world. The current economy is just too weak for many art galleries to survive.

Of course this is bad news for the gallery owner who is trying to make a living, but it is also very bad news for artists. As galleries close artists have less and less space to display and sell their work. I know many who see this as a time to despair and a time to give up on trying to make it as an artist. The economy is just too slow and too weak for an artist to survive. I hope you don’t think like that because I have some good news for artists working today.

It just keeps getting easier and more cost effective to sell your art online. Your destiny as an artist and your ability to sell your work is 100% in your hands. But it is not without challenges.

The challenge lies in navigating and managing all of the options that are available to you online. There are so many things you could do that it is easy to get overwhelmed and give up on the idea of selling your work via the internet. Which is why I have more good news for you, Art Palaver is going to focus 100% on helping you sell your art online.

This post is just a teaser of things to come and changes that on the way for this site. It will remain a blog but I will be adding many more features and programs that are going to enable you to sell your art which is going to enable you to keep making art. I spend most of my time emerged in the internet and social media. Now I am going to start focusing and sharing what I learn here on Art Palaver so that artists like yourself can be successful.

This will be for all creative types from visual artists, to musicians, to writers, photographers and anyone else creating art.

Like I said this is just a teaser. Stay tuned.

In case you haven’t heard the global economy is not doing so well. People are getting laid off and companies are going out of business left and right. It is in the news everyday all day, which has people spending less money, even those who still have their job. This is not good news for artists.

How do you sell your art, which enables you to keep making art, when people are worried about the economy? First things first, define our own economic reality. Turn off the television, put down the newspaper, and don’t go near a radio. Don’t let the media define your reality. Then start promoting yourself like your life depends on it.

When spending is down and sales are harder to come by self promotion for the artist becomes even more important. But what are the best ways to do that? That is a tough question. Especially when many artists dread the promotion and business side of art. Which is exactly why Alyson B. Stanfield wrote I’d rather be in the studio! The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion. (Pentas Press 2008).

Alyson knows that you are an artist because you like to make art, not because you want to be a public relations person. Which is why she packed her book full of tips and ideas on how to effectively promote your art so you can spend more time in your studio. She breaks down the Table of Contents into a “Table of Excuses.” Excuses such as, “There aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all,” and “I don’t live in an art town.” Just to name a few.

The book is a great 264 page tool to help any artist find new ideas and new ways to promote their art. It is well organized and easy to read and understand. I like it because it is a book that is formatted in such a way that it is easy to pull information from it without having to read it cover to cover.

The author also has a blog with a lot of good information in relation to selling and promoting art. You can find it at http://www.artbizblog.com/.

Have you read this book? What do you think? Leave a comment please.

Way back in 2005 I started a webzine called ZAF622. The online magazine published Q&A style interviews with local artists. Which meant artists living in and around Fort Collins Colorado. This blog is a spin off of ZAF622. Art Palaver started local as well but grew beyond the borders of Fort Collins, beyond the borders of the United States in fact.

The project that is ZAF622 continue to evolve as I morph it into an internet show. A show that I am taking on the road. One of my major goals with ZAF622 is to do stories in and from all 50 states. I want to meet more artists and find out what they are up to and share it with the world.

ZAF622 is also going to expand beyond artists. Though I have not nailed down what that looks like exactly I do know I want to also feature causes. Most I imagine will be in the form of small non profits but could also include personal stories of people who need help. Bottom line though ZAF622 will always be about people as it has always been. I believe there is more to learn about art by focusing on the artist. And there is more to learn about life by focusing on people.

These past few months have been about putting the pieces in place to launch this crazy idea of mine. And now that things are starting to come together I am working on getting the word out. Because I want this project to be very inclusive. I want to get as many people involved in as many ways as possible. Again I do not know exactly what that looks like, but we’ll figure it out.

Don’t be afraid to email me if you know of an artist working in the U.S. you would like to see featured. Or if your an artist working in the U.S. just raise your hand and say, “Over here!”

ZAF622 and Art Palaver have grown apart over the years but this project is going to bring them closer again. I’ll be keeping you updated on the show. Look for the first episode in January 2009.
