Let me start off this post with a few statistics:

- The number of professionally trained artists and art historians in the U.S. – Males 52%, Females 48%
- Percentage of artists at major institutions:
- National Gallery of Art — 98% male, 99.9% white
- National Portrait Gallery — 93% male, 99% white
- Hirshhorn Museum – modern and contemporary art — 95% male, 94% white
- Exhibition opportunities: Juried (artists unknown to juror) – Males 52%, Females 48%
- Exhibitions opportunities: Invited (artists known to juror) – Males 80%, Females 20%
- Gender distribution of visual artists in art texts – Males 90%, Females 10%
- Of the over 100 Tonys awarded since 1947 for theater direction, only 2-5% have

And we like to think of the art world as being progressive. Thankfully we have filmakers like Pamela Tanner Boll and Nancy Kennedy to help shed some light on this through their film "Who Does She Think She Is?"

"From the producing team, that won an Academy Award for Born Into Brothels, comes WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS?, a film that examines some of the most pressing issues of our time: parenting and work, partnering and independence, economics and art.

The film follows five women artists as they navigate the economic, psychological, and spiritual challenges of making work outside the elite art world. From Hawaii’s Big Island to the suburbs of Ohio, from New York City to the deserts of New Mexico, we watch as
these women—ranging in age from 27 to 65—fight to honor their vision and their families every day.

“(This film) is not about being a woman or being a woman artist but rather how
to be a human, how to find your true place in life.”
Jean M Murphy
Wellesley Centers for Women

Interviews with experts like Riane Eisler (The Chalice and the Blade), Maura Reilly (Sackler Center for Feminist Art-Brooklyn Museum) and the Guerrilla Girls add a cultural context for these women’s uplifting journeys. It is not accolades they seek; it’s simply the radical opportunity to live whole."

I have not seen the film but I wanted to share with you the trailer and the information. I do know that I don’t like the idea of anyone’s creativity being held back. That is the foundation of all that I do, the belief that every human being is creative. And that we would all be a lot better off if we all explored and worked on our individual creativity.

You may have heard about Hulu, an evil plot by aliens to destroy the world through free television on the internet. Because after all tv rots the brain and tv on the internet really softens it up. (Don’t take my word for it.) And it seems that even high brow television is a weapon in Hulu’s plot. Art21: Art of the Twenty-First Century, the PBS series is now on Hulu.

I find this pretty good news. Art21 is a series that really focuses on the artist and the process of making art. Living breathing artists who are working today. Each episode is just under an hour long and features more than one artist. Currently all 4 seasons of Art21 are available.

“Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit. Fascinating and intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art, and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic visions.”

I’ve included an episode for your viewing pleasure…

Architecture is a creative profession. An architect can bring creativity and function together to create works of art in the form of buildings. Frank Lloyd Wright is probably the most well known architect due to his forward thinking with designs that were unique for their time. Gio Ponti and Daniel Libeskind also come to mind. Chances are though you have not heard of Michael Reynolds.

Michael Reynolds is an architect that has been so ahead of his contemporaries that they took away his architecture license. Why? Because he was doing building experiments in the New Mexico desert that did not conform to current zoning and building laws. Mr. Reynolds has been building houses that he calls “Earthships.” Houses that are off the grid and self contained. Houses that use garbage for bricks. Beautiful houses that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional.

Earthship n. 1. passive solar home made of natural and recycled materials 2. thermal mass construction for temperature stabilization. 3. renewable energy & integrated water systems make the Earthship an off-grid home with little to no utility bills.

In the documentary Garbage Warrior filmmaker Oliver Hodge sheds some light on the life and work of Michael Reynolds. From how he got started over 30 years ago to his battles with the government over his right to build his Earthships. As well as Reynolds relief work in a tsunami destroyed third world that is eager for his new ideas and forward thinking.

After watching I wanted my own Earthship. And if you like the idea of no heating bill, no electric bill, no water bill, and not taking from the Earth just to live, you’ll probably want one too. It was also refreshing to see a documentary that is offering a solution to the environmental crisis we are in. I’ve grown tired of “the sky is falling” environmental documentaries we’ve seen in recent years.

You can check out the website for the movie here.

And if you want your very own copy you can buy that here.

I know I know, I have not been the blog posting fiend I once was. Don’t hate me and hang in there. (all 4 of you)

I came across this movie while I was reading Juxtapoz’s RSS feeds and I had to drop everything and help spread the word. Because the subject of said film is very exciting to me.

New Brow The Rise Of Underground Art is the title of the film. And this is a bit of what their web site states about the movie:

Pop Surrealism or Outsider Art is a wide spread populist art movement with origins in Low Brow art, underground comix, punk music, hotrod street culture, Kustum culture, Street Art, Graffiti, Graphic Design, Tattoo, Surf Culture, Tiki Culture and other California sub-cultures.

This is not a current version of Modern Pop Art. This a new movement, a new thinking in the art world. These are the artists that will inspire a new generation.

And here is a trailer:

What do you think?

Is it art?

Is it crime?

Personally I think yes and sometimes. And I must admit the quality of said graffiti can have an effect on my opinion. When I am painting over bad graffiti on the side of the building I manage I can be pretty grumpy. But when the train passes by there can be some pretty amazing graffiti on the side of those ugly drab cars. Some very creative work with layers and depth. Work that is a lot more interesting than ads on the side of buses. I can’t help but ponder who painted it and under what conditions.

I don’t think I know any graffiti artists. But I bet if I did I would have a better understanding and probably a little more appreciation for graffiti. Enter the new movie Bomb It!.

BOMB IT is the explosive new documentary from award-winning director Jon Reiss investigating the most subversive and controversial art form currently shaping international youth culture: graffiti.

Through interviews and guerilla footage of graffiti writers in action on 5 continents, BOMB IT tells the story of graffiti from its origins in prehistoric cave paintings thru its notorious explosion in New York City during the 70′s and 80′s, then follows the flames as they paint the globe. Featuring old school legends and current favorites such as Taki 183, Cornbread, Stay High 149, T-Kid, Cope 2, Zephyr, Revs, Os Gemeos, KET, Chino, Shepard Fairey, Revok, and Mear One. This cutting edge documentary tracks down today’s most innovative and pervasive street artists as they battle for control over the urban visual landscape. You’ll never look at public space the same way again.

BOMB IT has shot in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tijuana, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, and Tokyo.

That blurb was taken from the movie’s web site which you can find here. The site also lists the artists interviewed and there are too many names to count. I would venture a guess that it is close to a 100 or more. They all have names cooler than yours and many even have links to personal web sites.

The movie looks interesting to me because it would allow me to gain some knowledge on an art form that I am pretty ignorant on. And as you know I am a sucker for artists being interviewed. I may just have to set aside $29.95 and buy it because I doubt I am going to find it at my local Redbox. If your interested you can buy it here.
