Twitter is a microblogging service that was created in 2006 by a fellow named Jack Dorsey. The service limits each user’s post to 140 characters or less which is the same amount allowed by SMS. (AKA texting from your phone.)

Though the service started slow and was used mostly by those in the tech and computer fields it quickly grew once celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Oprah jumped on board. It is now one of the most popular websites on the internet.

But can Twitter be effective in promoting and selling your art work? You bet it can!

Twitter is another avenue that can get your work in front of eyeballs around the world, eyeballs you would have trouble reaching in any other way. Twitter after all is about connecting with people. And it is a great tool for building trust with those connections. Trust is what leads to sales. Right?

But how do you make this happen?

Each week I host a free weekly webinar to help you sell more art. Each webinars contain about 20 minutes of content and end with a live Q&A session. If you can’t make the live event the audio recording and slides are available for free afterward.

The next webinar is on SEO practices for artists.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it basically means taking steps so that search engines can find your information when people search for it. Are you an oil painter that specializes in painting bumblebees? Would you come up in Google is I search for “bumblebee oil painting”? I would hope so.

I’ll talk about the small steps you can take to improve the SEO for your site so those people interested in your artistic niche will find you when the search the web. Usually it is just a matter of tweaking the things you are already doing. And a lot of what I teach is lessons I have learned the hard way. But since I started taking these small steps I watched my traffic quickly increase.

If you are investing in an online presence for you art then you want traffic. There are two basic ways to get traffic. 1)Pay for it with ads. 2)Optimize your site to be found my search engines. For most of us SEO is the cost effective way to go.

Selling art online is a very charged topic. Many artists try it and give up, many artists don’t try at all, and many artists do very well at it. I believe a big aspect of promoting and marketing yourself as an artist on the internet is the mentality you have going into it.

Some classic mentalities I will cover include the “build it and they will come” mentality. Or the ever popular “buy my stuff” mentality. And one that seems to be special with artists, the “my stuff is too expensive to sell online” mentality, just to name a few. As many an athlete will tell you your success or failure when entering an arena can depend greatly on your mindset when you step on the field. It is no different for the artist looking to promote him or herself on the internet.

This will be a more active webinar where I hope to hear more from you and what is in your head. How do you feel about promoting and selling your work online? Because of that format I am limiting the number of attendees to only 10 artists. This we can have a better discussion and learn from each other.

This is a bit of an experiment but if it proves effective it just means I’ll host more webinars with smaller audiences to try and boost the information sharing.

When it comes to marketing and promoting your art a quality list is your most important tool.

I like to call it your artist “fan base” but it is traditionally known as your “list.” Building and maintaining your list is absolutely critical when it comes to marketing, promoting, and selling your artwork. Quality list building is important for both online and offline marketing efforts. How is your list looking these days? When was the last time you got in contact with your list? How old are some of the names on that list? Do you value numbers over quality?

That is the topic of the next free webinar from Art Palaver.

I’ll go over the basics of list building, the tools of list building, and important strategies on maintaining you list. This will be useful if you already have a list or are just starting to build your fan base. Or maybe you’ve let your list collect some dust and you have not been in touch with them, we’ll talk about reviving an old list too.

Facebook is a powerful tool for artists looking to promote and sell art online.

The most visited URL on the internet is www.google.com, the second most visited is www.facebook.com. What started as a way for students of Havard University to stay connected has grown into the second most popular site on the whole world wide web.

Facebook currently has more than 400 million active users, 50% of those users log on to Facebook in any given day, more than 35 million users update their status daily, and an average user spends more than 55 minutes per day on Facebook. (Find more stats here.) What this means for the modern day artist is that there is a community of Facebook waiting to get to know you and your art. It means when we talk about marketing and promoting your work through social media Facebook is the one place that can not be ignored. Which is why I am excited to offer a free webinar on Facebook for artists.

Introducing The Art Palaver Art Marketing Webinars

Learn business, marketing, and promotion of your art with free artist webinars…

Promoting, marketing, and selling art is always a challenge and for many artists selling art online is an even greater challenge. I believe a big part of the challenge comes from an artist having to go at it alone most of the time when it comes to art marketing. Most artists do not have the benefit of a representative or a manager. Even those that have gallery representation must do some self promotion to maximize the opportunity of being in a gallery.

Of course money is an issue as well. A lot of artists must “boot strap” their art career by scratching together funds to help market their work from wherever they can. Few have the benefit of a big bank account, an angel investor, or a wealthy supporter.

Always keep in mind that these are just challenges, not reasons to stop pursuing your life as a working artist.

My mission with Art Palaver is to help artists with those challenges. I try to offer information and support in anyway I can. Recently I’ve stepped back a bit and spent a lot of time doing some Art Palaver soul searching on how I can advance it to the next level and offer better help and support in new ways. From that came one of the new tools I am offering which is free webinars on a regular basis.

Each webinar will be about an hour long and will focus on different topics that relate to promotion and marketing for the modern independent artist. I also hope to bring in guest panelists who are knowledgeable in areas that would be helpful.

The first art marketing webinar will be next week on March 17th at 2PM Mountain Time, the topic will be Facebook. (Look for a follow up post with more details. But you can register here now.) I also plan on scheduling evening webinars as well. Time will tell what days and times work the best for most people. But even if you can not make the live webinar event you will be able to download the audio a day or so after the webinar.

I did a series of webinars in December of 2009 and I really liked the webinar platform for many reason. It allows the audience access in a couple of ways so more people can be included. Either join on your computer via the internet or call in on your phone if you can not be on a computer at the time of the live event. Webinars also allow audience members to participate in the discussion through text chat and voice chat. This interaction is probably what excites me the most. Writing blog posts is great but I never know if I am delivering the exact information you are looking for. When we can have a discussion we can get specific questions answered as well as learn from each other experiences. I’ll be looking for artists to be on the panel as well, to share what has worked and what has not worked.

Let me stress that these webinars are 100% free.
