City Of Fort Collins Art Classes

January 2nd, 2008 admin

Registration begins January 3rd for classes in the Winter/Spring Fort Collins Recreator. There is quite the range of classes being offered at very affordable rates. The city classes provide a good option for those interested in venturing into a new medium or maybe working on further developing your current skills. Classes such as these are also good for meeting other people working in your medium. Just glancing at the schedule there is quite the range of options; such as basketry, fiber arts, drawing glass arts, painting, jewelry, pottery, wood arts, photography, and also music and theater options.

Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2008 admin

Sorry for leaving without saying “good-bye.” Just got back from a holiday trip visiting family from both sides of the aisle. That meant stops in Lancaster County Pennsylvania and Chicagoland Illinois. One area seemed void of artistic activity and one had more than I could take in. I’ll let you guess which one is which.

Now I am back and ready to get to work. First thing on the agenda is to get posting here on Art Palaver. Next will be firing up ZAF622 again. Time to get back out there and meet artists in order to share their story. The other item on my Fort Collins art plate is the Fort Collins Art Festival. Big or small we need to make it happen in 2008.

I have lot of ideas for ZAF622 and Art Palaver in 2008 but I believe it is better to talk about something you have done than something your going to do, so you’ll just have to wait and see.

Thank you for your continued support and welcome to 2008!

Fort Collins Art In Public Places Board Meetings

December 18th, 2007 admin

I have been planning to attend an Art in Public Places board meeting for the past couple of months. I was going to do this so I could report to you, my ever faithful readers, what is discussed at those meetings. The website states that the meetings are the 3rd Wednesday of every month. But yet again they have canceled the meeting on the 19th because they already had it on the 12th. This has happened the past couple of months and is quite frustrating. How do you cancel a meeting and have it before the appointed time? Maybe they are trying to hide something? After all they are spending a lot of our tax payer dollars.

Click here to see the boards web page. I will keep trying so we can all learn what goes on in those meetings. And yes I have emailed them using the contact information posted on the site and I have yet to receive a response.

Is This Fort Collins?

December 7th, 2007 admin

So I was doing a bit of research the other day and came across an article in The Rocky Mountain Chronicle that started with this description of what Fort Collins is for a young artist:

“To the ambitious 20-something artist, Fort Collins can feel a lot like purgatory. It’s not half as bad as a small town, where young creative types are often ostracized, if not physically threatened; and it’s not half as good as a big city, where the artist — at least in his mind — stands poised to cut teeth in an environment that is infinitely more eclectic, supportive and challenging. To the young artist, Fort Collins sits on scarily comfy neutral ground, where locals seem relatively attentive, if a little too glazed-over by microbrews, shopping and sunlight to be titillated by the pressing quandaries of the soul. It can feel like a place where music is made for dancing instead of discussion, a place where paintings are made to clutter a coffeehouse wall.

And so the young artist either a) skips town weeks after being handed a B.A. at the university, often en route to a teaching job overseas, b) joins in with the small, dedicated local artistic community, goes to a lot of potlucks and reads poetry at the Bean Cycle, or c) after a certain number of drinks, consistently threatens to leave for either coast, but, to the amusement or annoyance of his friends, never does.”   ~Elliot Johnston

(The article, about the local band Vee Device can be found here. Thanks Rocky Mountain Chronicle.)

From the many conversations I have had with artists in Fort Collins it seems Elliot came pretty close to hitting the nail on the head. What do you think? Fort Collins is a town with a lot of art happening but is it a place for a young artist “cut their teeth?” Why or why not? How can we improve the art and culture in this town?

Culture Art History Science

December 6th, 2007 admin

“Creativity is an essential part of everyone’s humanity and needs to be cultivated.” The Rise of the Creative Class, Richard Florida

That quote was taken from the website of the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. This is also taken from the site: Fort Collins and Loveland are exploring a cooperative venture to create an SCFD in northern Colorado based on Denver’s successful program. The SCFD would provide a consistent source of funding to a wide and diverse group of cultural, art and scientific organizations in our communities.

And based on that website this sounds like a project that is in the very beginning stages. At first look it seems like a good thing. Art funding in this part of the country is pretty hard to come by. So if the SCFD can generate some that would be great. Maybe it could fund a Fort Collins Art Festival?

Is There Still A Rocky Mountain Foundry?

November 17th, 2007 admin

I ask the question, “Is there still a Rocky Mountain Foundry in the works?” because I have not been able to find any information about the upstart artist community. The idea of the RMF was to be an affordable artist community with studio, gallery, and living space built from large metal freight container boxes. It planned on being located near Old Town Fort Collins. Last year the editors of the Rocky Mountain Chronicle named it “The Best New Addition to the Arts Scene.”

Currently the website, www.rockymountainfoundry.org, is a dead URL. And the address is not registered. I did some asking around and some Googling but could not find out any information on the current status of the RM Foundry. If you know anything please leave a comment.

The Fort Collins Art Festival

November 15th, 2007 admin

Ah the Fort Collins Art Festival, that great time of year when the city’s artists show off their work to the community and the nation. People of all types come out to see art and meet artists. Discoveries are made, deals are struck, connections begin, and inspiration is in the air. And all those people from around the country who travel here to visit our city for it’s well known art, doing a little shopping in Old Town, and touring a brewery or two. The weekend is always a good time and quite a gem on the landscape of Fort Collins’ culture.

Hey wait a minute… There is no Fort Collins Art Festival. Sure we have a few events around where artists can rent a booth such as New West Fest. But there is no weekend that is accessible to artists of all levels and people in any tax bracket that really brings out and showcases the art community in Fort Collins. No one time people from around the world could come to Fort Collins and know they would see what we have to offer when it comes to art.

I am not complaining. I am starting dialogue to create change. I believe all the people of Fort Collins would benefit from a city wide Art Festival.

What do you think? Leave a comment and let us all know.
