War And Politics At Fort Collins MoCA

October 15th, 2007 admin

Please join us for
“SpeakEasy”
on Tuesday evening, October 16,
at 7 p.m. at FCMOCA.

SpeakEasy is an informal conversation about the art in the galleries. This time it’s “In This Life: Reflections on War and Politics.” Artists Kumiko McKee, Felipe Echevarria, and Miguel Tio have painted pictures in response to 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Each artist brings a different viewpoint from the anguish of warfare, to the paradox of horror and beauty, to a hopeful and spiritual interpretation of events.

Jennifer Davey will start the discussion and facilitate the dialogue between people who attend. Whether you like to talk or just listen, you’re bound to learn a lot from the insights of others. It’s a great experience whether you are a novice just beginning to enjoy looking at art, or an experienced museum patron.

Feel free to invite a friend…we hope you will attend!

I am not even sure how to introduce this article by the Wall Street Journal. Kids not old enough to watch PG movies are buying priceless art. You just have to read it for yourself.

Painting And Drawing Intensive

October 9th, 2007 admin

(Found this post on Craig’s List)

PAINTING & DRAWING INTENSIVE:
The Portrait Model
With Felipe Echevarria
October 4 - November 15, 2007
Thursdays - 6:00 - 9:00pm
All levels, beginners welcome!
$200 + $35 model fee - or $40 single class drop in rate.
Competent drawing skills are critical for sucessfully creating a quality work of painted art, and a lack of drawing skill can keep a student’s painted work from becoming a masterpiece.

This intensive is designed to heighten both your drawing and painting skills so they may complement one another. This will allow every picture you make to be consistent and of high quality, no matter what style or subject you do. The creation process can then be more effortless and enjoyable. You will accelerate your ability to perceive and render the solidity of physical form in deep space, and correctly apply perspective to the picture elements. You will then combine the above with fine art techniques for rendering form and dealing with edges and values. Further practice includes defining personal vision and style, doing more with less, and adding to your arsenal of techniques for making drawings and paintings.

50% of the time will be drawing and 50% painting. You can paint in the media of your choice. Because this intensive is on a drop in basis, each student will receive helpful individual attention designed for their own level of skill. Most sessions will start with a brief lecture/demo by the instructor.

Felipe Echevarria has 17 years painting and drawing experience and over 10 years experience teaching. Visit www.felipeechevarria.com for examples of Felipe’s work.

Do Or Die List For Artists

October 8th, 2007 admin

On September 28th I posted Robert Genn’s “Success Course of the Arts.” The Art News Blog created their own list to answer Genn’s:

Do or Die List for Artists

  • Learn to like noodles from packets as you probably won’t have much spare cash to buy real food for at least a few years.
  • Have at least a couple artist friends so that you’re not always the only weird creative person in the room.
  • Find a psychologist or a good shoulder to cry on before you start creating art as it will bring up a lot of stuff.
  • Inspiration is found in the studio while you are working. If you sit around waiting for inspiration before you start creating you will have about 15 paintings finished when you’re 60.
  • Never listen to the criticism of family and friends, especially if they’re not an artist or gallery owner.
  • Don’t take criticism personally. It’s not an attack on you as a person (unless it’s from a petty little person that needs to put others down to feel important).
  • Don’t expect to be “discovered”.
  • It’s OK to steal from other artists, as long as you don’t remain a parrot.
  • Learn about business, marketing, taxes, media, and start your own website.
  • Work with the best quality art materials available and don’t expect art collectors to buy your cheaply made art that will only last a few years before falling apart.
  • Being an artist is a privilege. Don’t feel sorry for yourself or other artists that are “struggling”.. feel sorry for people working in jobs that they hate.

What would you add to either list?

Success Course of the Arts

September 28th, 2007 admin

Painter Robert Genn says he often gets asked to be a personal art coach for people. Instead he offers, “A sort of Jenny Craig Success Course of the Arts.”

Here it is:

Find a sanctuary where you can comfortably work.
Dedicate at least two hours a day to your art.
Have more than enough equipment and supplies.
Set short- and long-term goals and keep track of progress.
Think of your work as exercise, not championship play.
Explore series development and exhaust personal themes.
Work alone with the benefit of books and perhaps tapes.
Replace passive consumption with creative production.
Use your own intuition and master your technology.
Feel the joy of personal, self-generated sweat.
Fall in love with your own working processes.
Be forever on the lookout for the advent of style.
Try to be your own person and claim your rights.
Don’t bother setting yourself up for rejection.
Don’t swing too wildly and damage the well-being of others.
Don’t jump into the ring until you’re feeling fit.

What works for you? What advice would you offer to other artists?

Congress Having A Chat With Artists

September 26th, 2007 admin

Musicians seem to be the most common artist to find themselves sitting before Congress. I can remember Tipper Gore and the PMRC. This week it is Hip-Hop that is under fire. And it is the same tension that it always is, just a different form of music.

Read the Denver Post article here.

What are your thoughts? Do artists have a responsibility to homogenize their art and experience to make it safe for all? Or do we need to restrict certain art? Thoughts?
