Art Inside and Out

August 23rd, 2007 by Daryle Dickens

A few days ago I picked up a copy of the 2007 MOCA Studio Tour Date Book. And at first glance I already noticed a few upgrades (and downgrades) from previous years.

For a second year in a row the guide is in a date book format which means it could be useful after the tour is over. Though your year would have to rotate around the tour because the calender is September 2007 to September 2008. But unlike past years the street map is part of the book and not a separate pull out page. Which will be more manageable. Also the front cover is designed in a way it can be used as a bookmark. Another handy date holding feature. And the artists on the tour are indexed in the back of the book which will make it easier to find the artist information your looking for. These simple upgrades should help in navigating from studio to studio while on the tour.

On the downside there are fewer artists listed. 39 studios are listed on the map as opposed to the 60 studios on last years tour. And at $30 for a family pass this year’s tour cost more for less available studios. I wonder if less artists want to be on the tour or if MOCA changed its selection process?

What is interesting to note is the cover says …”over 50 artists”….
    a bit misleading dontcha think?

It’s not juried, and the fee seems kind of high for participation. It’s listed as a findraiser on their website- on the backs of local artists it seems.
I agree the jump in price from last year is a bit large given the general lack of quality.
