Rocky Mountain Chronicle’s Design Fort Collins Logo Contest

March 17th, 2008 admin

Think you can do better than this:

Fort Collins Logo

Then put your pixels where your mouth is in The Rocky Mountain Chronicle’s Logo Redesign Contest.

The city of Fort Collins paid $80,000 to a Tennessee-based marketing firm to come up with a new “brand” for our community, including a fresh logo and slogan, “where renewal is a way of life.” The product is now temporarily shelved, and we’ve heard people complain that the new package would better portray some type of feminine sanitary product than a city.
We think Chronicle readers can do better, so we’re launching our own logo and tagline REDESIGN CONTEST.

We’re looking for the entertaining and the irreverent, the cynical and the sublime: you know, kind of like us.

Logos can be in any medium (drawings, dioramas, graffiti art, tattoos, etc.) and not-so-artsy wordsmiths can send us tagline and slogan ideas.

We’ll accept submissions through April 3 and announce winners in our April 17 issue. Contestants can send their designs and ideas to fclogo@rmchronicle.comThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or bring them by Chronicle HQ at 316 W. Mountain Ave. in Fort Collins. Entries will be judged by Chronicle staff.
Winners will get $80,000 and a trip to Tennessee (just kidding).
The winners actually get 25 t-shirts printed by Go West with their designs and taglines on them along with gift certificates to the Matter Bookstore and Fish Restaurant.
For more details, email fclogo@rmchronicle.comThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or call 493-4702.

I have mine in the works. Looking forward to seeing what else people come up with.

Music To Save The Arkansas River

March 5th, 2008 admin

Gabrielle Louise

A few months ago we talked about Gabrielle Louise’s mission to get touring musicians to use biodiesel fuels while on the road. Now I am here to talk about her efforts to raise awareness about the Arkansas River.

What is going on with the Arkansas River you ask? According to the web site Save The Arkansas River, "The Lake County Commissioners declared an emergency on Feb. 13, 2008. The reason for this declaration was a build-up of underground water on the east side of Leadville. This water build-up has been rising steadily for years. Because of certain conditions, including the heavy snowpack this year, this action was taken to help protect the area, its residents and visitors." The problem is much larger than that paragraph can cover. Go to www.savethearkansasriver.org to get all the details.

Back to Gabrielle. She has written a song to help get the word out on the issues surrounding this environmental crisis. And she is offering the download for free on her web site. (Find it here.) And if your interested you can sign a petition to the powers that be here.

And in even more Gabby news she has also recorded a song for Willie Nelson’s Peace Research Institute. Read about that right here. Being noticed by the Red Headed Stranger can’t be a bad thing. Good job Gabby.

Clyfford Still Museum

March 3rd, 2008 admin

Do you know about the Clyfford Still Museum? You will after reading this:

The Clyfford Still Museum was founded to promote public and scholarly understanding of the late artist’s work and legacy, through the presentation and preservation of the Clyfford Still Estate, totaling approximately 2,400 artworks bequeathed to the City of Denver in 2004.

Considered one of the most important painters of the twentieth century, Still (1904-1980) was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II.

Still’s estate—now understood to be 94 percent of the artist’s total output—as well as his extensive archive, have been sealed off from the public since 1980. The Clyfford Still Museum will be located in Denver, Colorado, in the heart of the Civic Center Cultural Complex, near the Denver Art Museum and its new Daniel Libeskind-designed building, the Denver Public Library designed by Michael Graves, and the Colorado History Museum. For more information about the Clyfford Still Museum, please visit www.clyffordstillmuseum.org.

So why am I bringing up the Clyfford Still Museum? Today the museum offered press releases of the museum’s design. Ground is expected to break early next year with the museum opening in 2010. It will be located near the Denver Art Museum and Denver Library and have 10,000 square feet of gallery space.

Ok so now you know a bit more about the new Cyfford Still Museum. A bit more. Go to www.clyffordstillmuseum.org if you want to learn more.
