Point Z

January 15th, 2008 admin

Here we are in a New Year and people are expressing their goals. Do you ever think about your goals as an artist? Ever think about where you want to take your art, or where you want your art to take you?

From conversations I’ve had with artists it seems that few think like this. Few artists plan out their artistic career the same way people do with careers in other fields. I believe it would make sense for an artist to put some thought into their art career. To create some goals and start to make a plan to accomplish those goals. Imagine yourself standing on Point “A.” What would Point “Z” be for you? For example mine could be “I will make a living writing about artists and the arts.”

Now I have Point A and Point Z. After having a start and an end I can begin working on the steps in between. (More on that later.)

What is your Point Z?

  • I will publish a novel.
  • I will have a solo show in a gallery.
  • I will have a photograph published in a magazine.
  • I will headline a show at Red Rocks.

You get the idea. If you have dreamed about such things take the next step and write down the goal in an affirmative “I will” voice. That is a good simple way to start working on your goals as an artist.

Artist Looking To Form A Painting Group

January 10th, 2008 admin

Came across this in the artist section of Craigslist, so I thought I would pass it along…

I am a developing artist in the community, however I am no longer able to take classes at the university due to my other requirements. I miss being able to have constructive critique sessions on my works in progress/finished materials. I am wanting to get a group of people together with the same interest and willing to expand and learn from one another. I was thinking along the lines of having two meetings per month, one being a formal critique on work that we are working on/finished. This can be a very exciting opportunity to grow as an artist as well as meet some creative individuals. If you are interested please contact me. Thanks and looking forward to it!

Musician’s Biodiesel Network

January 9th, 2008 admin

Gabrielle Louise is a singer song-writer from Colorado who tours a lot. She realized all that driving she does takes a toll on our planet. So Gabby decided to switch to Biodiesel. She is even going further and looking for other touring musicians to do the same. That is why she created the Musician’s Biodiesel Network. (Willie Nelson would be proud.)

Here is a video she has created introducing the idea:

Gabby will be in Fort Collins to play a show this Friday night, the 11th at Everyday Joe’s Coffee House.

Fort Collins MoCA Gallery 101

January 7th, 2008 admin

FORT COLLINS MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART would like to invite local new and emerging artists to submit their work to the museum. FCMOCA is preparing for art submissions at least twice a year as scheduling permits. Artwork will be displayed in our new gallery space, Gallery 101, a space dedicated to local emerging artists. These exhibits are reserved for artists with little or no experience exhibiting in museum or gallery settings.

Local artists are encouraged to submit work which explores new media, ideas, and/or work that speaks to contemporary
issues. We are excited to have a space in which new emerging artists can have a professional atmosphere to display their work. Artists who are selected for participation in an exhibition may not submit again for 12 months.

What Is Your Excuse?

January 4th, 2008 admin

I am a bit ADD, I work in a lot of mediums, never able to settle in one. But I have a few that I spend a lot of time in, one of them being Photoshop. I currently work with Photoshop 7.0. I also spend a lot of time reading about Photoshop and searching out new ways to use the very deep and rich software. Currently new information will be based on Photoshop CS3, the latest and greatest version of Photoshop. I still use 7.0 because CS3 is around $800. I have to admit that I have found myself believing I need to upgrade in order to do certain things. In other words I use having an old version of Photoshop as an excuse for not creating. After seeing the work of Bob Staake (thanks Drawn!) I am reminded that it is a pretty lame excuse. Mr. Staake is an author and illustrator who works in Photoshop 3.0. His illustrations are beautiful.

In all mediums there is the potential to use lack of the latest and greatest materials for not creating. It is hard to avoid. But I know the most important thing is to work. Work with what you have. Do the best you can with the resources in hand and the rest will come.

City Of Fort Collins Art Classes

January 2nd, 2008 admin

Registration begins January 3rd for classes in the Winter/Spring Fort Collins Recreator. There is quite the range of classes being offered at very affordable rates. The city classes provide a good option for those interested in venturing into a new medium or maybe working on further developing your current skills. Classes such as these are also good for meeting other people working in your medium. Just glancing at the schedule there is quite the range of options; such as basketry, fiber arts, drawing glass arts, painting, jewelry, pottery, wood arts, photography, and also music and theater options.

Click here for the pdf version of the recreator.

Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2008 admin

Sorry for leaving without saying “good-bye.” Just got back from a holiday trip visiting family from both sides of the aisle. That meant stops in Lancaster County Pennsylvania and Chicagoland Illinois. One area seemed void of artistic activity and one had more than I could take in. I’ll let you guess which one is which.

Now I am back and ready to get to work. First thing on the agenda is to get posting here on Art Palaver. Next will be firing up ZAF622 again. Time to get back out there and meet artists in order to share their story. The other item on my Fort Collins art plate is the Fort Collins Art Festival. Big or small we need to make it happen in 2008.

I have lot of ideas for ZAF622 and Art Palaver in 2008 but I believe it is better to talk about something you have done than something your going to do, so you’ll just have to wait and see.

Thank you for your continued support and welcome to 2008!
