ZAF622 Where Are You?

January 30th, 2008 admin

Some of you know of my other project, ZAF622 The Fort Collins Art Webzine. You also know that it has been on hiatus. And though you can not tell yet that hiatus is officially over. I have already done some interviews and am getting them hammered out and ready for publishing. I am also going to once again attempt to publish an actual "zine" to go along with the website.

The big word there is attempt. Last summer I tried it and it did not turn out so good. But I did learn from that experience and I hope to use what I learned in publishing the next one. For those of you not familiar with zines and zine culture it is basically a homemade magazine. Usually printed on copy paper and hand assembled then hand distributed around the community. The Matter Book Store has a nice little zine section if your interested in checking some out.

I’ll be sure and post here when I publish ZAF622. Thanks for all the inquiries as to ZAF’s fate, they helped me find the energy to start it back up again.

The Canvas Continues To Scroll

January 28th, 2008 admin

When I was a kid my dad and I would go to the movies a lot. I can remember one time when we set out to see The Empire Strikes Back after it had been re-released into theaters. Back before we all had home movie players of some sort this is how you got to see a movie again. Somehow we got our times mixed up and the movie showing was Raiders of the Lost Ark. A movie that was not even on my kid radar at the time, life was all about Star Wars. But since we were there and it was a single screen theater, we decided to see it. Which turned out to be serendipity.

Why am I telling you this? Because of one line in that movie. A mere moment in the film that I always wait for, to this day, every time I watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is about 2/3 into the movie. Indy has found the Ark, had it taken away from him, destroyed the plane it was supposed to leave on and is now hiding from the Nazis. His friend Sallah informs him that the Nazis have loaded the Ark onto a truck. Indiana then replies, "Meet me at Omar’s. I am going after that truck."

Sallah asks, "How?"

Indiana, "I don’t know, I am making this up as I go."

That is the line that over the years I have always loved to hear. I think because it sums up how I do a lot of things in life. Like this blog for example. The dialogue of my movie might go something like this:

Daryle: "Through a blog I am going to help the art and artists of Fort Collins."

Sallah: "How?"

Daryle: "I don’t know I am making this up as I go."

I bring this up because I have been getting asked about Art Palaver and ZAF622 quite a bit lately. What is my plan? Where are they going? Questions of that nature. I thought I would do some thinking out loud to help with those questions. I don’t have a plan. I have ideas. I have dreams. I have hopes. But I do not have a plan mapped out. I can almost hear some of you screaming at the screen, "You have to have a plan!" After all failing to plan is planning to fail. There is wisdom in that.  But for me it was more important to act than to plan.

I do know that I want to help get the word out about art happenings around town. And I know I want to bring people together. And I believe a blog can do those things. I good blog can be a community of people having a constant dialogue. Art Palaver is not at the point yet but I believe one day it will be. I have talked to people who have made connections with each other because of ZAF622 and Art Palaver so I know it is possible, we just need to keep working at it.

It is important for me to know what you want to hear about. Do you like the artist interviews of ZAF622? (they will be back very very soon by the way.) Do you like hearing about art openings around town or do you see enough of that elsewhere? Do you want more links to interesting things going on in the larger art world? Are you looking for grant and funding information? How about how-to stuff? What mediums are you most interested in? Do you understand blogs and how they work? Do you know you can get each post emailed to you? Or read them via an RSS reader? Talk to me. You can either leave a comment in the form below or email me at daryle@artpalaver.com.

Bottom line I believe in art. I believe in artists. I believe in community. I am doing what I can.

Fort Collins Band Soon To Be Famous

January 21st, 2008 admin

The Coloradoan reported over the weekend that Fort Collins band Tickle Me Pink has signed a 5 year recording contract with Wind-Up Records.  This should be viewed as good news for all Fort Collins artists.

Shoplifting In Bizzaro World

January 18th, 2008 admin

Just came across an interesting practice artists are doing. It is called shopdropping, the opposite of shoplifting.

SHOPDROPPING strives to take back a share of the visual space we encounter on daily basis. Similar to the way street art stakes a claim to public space for self expression, my shopdropping project subverts commercial space for artistic use in an attempt to disrupt the mundane commercial process with a purely artistic moment. The photographs act as a visual journal of my travels over the past few years. Displayed in nonlinear combinations the images remix the traditional narrative of the passing of time. The vibrant individuality of each image is a stark contrast to the repetitive, functional, package design that is replaced. Shopdropping gives voice to the pervasive disillusionment from our increasingly commercial society. A voice that is, paradoxically, made possible only by commercial technological advancements.

That was taken from shopdropping.net.

It seems I am seeing more and more art that is made and then just left in public spaces. I’ve even heard of cities that have walls available for public creation of art. I wonder how official Haystack Rock is?

(Thanks Lost in E Minor for the tip.)

Sponsor Art Palaver Posts

January 15th, 2008 admin

I am now offering sponsorship of Art Palaver posts. Simple little banners placed in posts to advertise what ever message you want to get out there. And linked to your website. As I test the waters for this the rates are very low. $2 a post for businesses and $1 a post for artists. (A minimum of 10 posts.)

The sponsorship banner will not expire and will always be part of the post. It will also be seen in RSS feeds and email subscriptions.

Be the first to sign up. (I dare you.)

Email info@artpalaver.com for details.
