Arturo Sandoval is Coming to Fort Collins

That is when and where Beet Street is having its kick off event. Part of that event is jazz legend Arturo Sandoval. If you don’t know who that is check out this list:

  • 1978 - Receives Grammy for Best Latin Album (Irakere I).
  • 1980 - Receives Grammy nomination for Best Latin Album (Irakere II).
  • 1982 - Is voted Cuba’s best instrumentalist (received this award from
    1982 – 1990 consecutively).
  • 1988 - Receives Gold Tucan in Brazil for best instrumentalist.
  • 1990 - Accepts the position of full professorship at Florida International University.
  • 1991 - 27th annual Golden Feather Award – Artist of the Year.

  • 1991 - Edition BMI releases Brass Concepts, a method book by
    Arturo Sandoval.
  • 1992 - Presented with an award for his efforts in the support of the
    - Adoption Center of Denver, CO.
  • 1992 - Jazz Artist of the Year (Brazilian Press).
  • 1992 - Creates the “Arturo Sandoval’s Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet Scholar Award” at the Univ. of Idaho in the memory of friend and mentor, the late Dizzy Gillespie.
  • 1992 - Michelob Jazz Festival in Puerto Rico is dedicated to Arturo Sandoval.
  • 1993 - Sandoval begins his association with Grammy in the School program (NARAS).
  • 1993 - Honorary Citizen of Baltimore, presented by the mayor Kurt L. Schmoke at Symphony Hall
  • 1993 - Sandoval receives four Grammy Award nominations.
    - Best Jazz Album (I Remember Clifford), Best Jazz Instrumental
    - Arrangement (Cherokee), Best Instrumental Composition for
    - Motion Picture (Mambo Kings),
    - Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album (GRP All Star Big Band).
  • 1993 - Performs with band at the Grammy Awards (Cherokee).
  • 1993 - Honorary Citizen of Walt Disney World.
  • 1993 - Clearwater Jazz Holliday presents Sandoval the
    International Jazz Award.
  • 1994 - Becomes first inductee of the Walt Disney World Jazz Hall of Fame.
  • 1994 - Becomes a member of the Board of Directors in the Educational
    Committee at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
  • 1994 - Performs at the Grammy Awards as a special guest with Gloria
    Estefan, and continues to participate in the Grammy in the School
    Program giving lectures and performing with the All American Band.
  • 1994 - University of Central Oklahoma in conjuction with the
    Oklahoma Symphony create the “Arturo Sandoval Trumpet Scholarship”
  • 1994 - Presented with the Key to the City of Fresno, California by the
    Governor in a non-profit event.
  • 1994 - Sandoval becomes the fourth recipient of the Hispanic
    Achievement Award presented by the Pepsi-Cola Co. and Hispanic
    Magazine in Washington DC. Past recipients have been Anthony
    Quinn, Paul Rodriguez, and Gloria Estefan.
  • 1994 - US Secretary of the Army, Togo West presents Sandoval with a
    Plaque commemorating his performance of the Sandoval Trumpet Concerto at the 1812 Overture Concert for the Joint Chiefs of
    Staff at the Washington Monument in front of 30,000 people.
  • 1994 - Michael Greene, president of NARAS presents Sandoval with
    “The NARAS Foundation’s Award for Excellent in Music
    Education” at the Los Angeles Coliseum on November 26 in front of 96,000 people attending the USC vs. Notre Dame football game.
  • 1994 - Performs at the closing ceremony of The Summit of the Americas for 34 heads of state including President Clinton in Miami, Florida.
  • 1994 - Completes the music score for the film “The Perez Family” staring Marisa Tomei and Angelica Houston.
  • 1995 - Tony Bennet, Patty LaBelle and Arturi Sandoval were featured
    Artists at the Super bowl half time show in Miami, Florida January 29, 1995.
  • 1995 - Hal Leonard Publishing releases three new educational books that include Sandoval’s recording on CD and cassette of Arban and his Personal studies.
  • 1995 - Sandoval perforfm the National Anthem on ABC for the opening of the Miami Grand Prix.
  • 1995 - Sandoval’s album “Danzon” receives 3 Grammy nominations and
    Obtains Grammy Award for “Best Latin Jazz Album”
  • 1995 - Sandoval performs at the Grammy Nominee party with
    the Grammy All American Jazz and Choir and performs with Tony
    Bennett at the Musicares event honoring Mr. Bennett.
  • 1995 - Billboard Award 1995 “Best Latin Jazz Album” for Danzon.
  • 1996 - Billboard Award 1996 “Best Latin Jazz Album” for
    Arturo Sandoval & The Latin Train.
  • 1996 - Jazz Central Station Global Jazz Poll Award - Best Latin Jazz Group.
  • 1996 - “Arturo Sandoval Trumpet Scholarship” is created at Florida International University.
  • 1996 - Sandoval is featured at the Walt Disney 25th Anniversarycelebration.
  • 1996 - Commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose a musical “Pepito’s Story”.
  • 1996 - Sandoval receives 10th Anniversary “F.A.C.E” excellence award in music.
  • 1996 - Receives Grammy nomination for “Best Instrumental
    Composition” Real McBop.
  • 1996 - Sandoval is the featured artist with Celine Dion during the Academy Awards (Oscars) telecast.
  • 1997 - Awarded full tenture at Florida International University.
  • 1997 - Performs at the Presidential Inaugural Ball for President Clinton in Washington, DC.
  • 1997 - Receives American Jazz Award.
  • 1997 - Arturo is the featured soloist with the Academy Awards (Oscars)
    Orchestra.
  • 1997 - Columbus, GA declares January 17th to be Arturo Sandoval Day.
  • 1997 - Sandoval is invited by the Australian Government to ring in the
    New Year’s with a live presentation and broadcast from
    Sydney, Australia.
  • 1998 - Warner Bros. /HBO acquire rights to Sandoval’s life story for motion picture release.
  • 1998 - Sandoval’s album “Hot House” wins the Grammy Award for Best
    Latin Jazz Album.
  • 1998 - “Hot House” receives Billboard Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.
  • 1999 - Sandoval Performs at MusiCares with Gloria Estefan a tribute
    Honoring Stevie Wonder.
  • 2000 - Performs live on A&E with the Boston Pops 4th July

    Emmy Awards Nominations, including Best Made for TV movie,

  • 2001 - Sandoval wins the Emmy Award for Outstanding Music
    Compositions for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special.
  • 2001 - Receives the ASCAP Founders Award.
  • 2002 - Performs at the World Economic Forum.
  • 2002 - Receives the NARA’s Heroes Award.
  • 2002 - Ms. Marilyn Bergman invites Arturo to launch the 1st Annual
    ASCAP Young Composer’s Award.
  • 2002 - To the delight of critics and fans alike Arturo releases his first
    piano album “My passion for the Piano”.
  • 2003 - Released “Trumpet Evolution” rave reviews, paying tribute to the world’s most influential Trumpeters of our time
  • 2003 - Performed with Charlotte Church & and guest of honor at a speaking engagement in Hawaii for thousands of IBM employees from around the world
  • 2003 - Signed an endorsement / sponsorship deal with Johnny Walker and have begun a largely visible campaign with them.
  • 2003 - Recorded on Rod Stewart’s multi platinum selling albums of Classic Standard Covers and performed on an A&E television special.
  • 2003 - Joined RADD as a supporting board member and - Will do several radio spots and commercials
  • 2003 - Given the Key to Miami by government officials

  • 2004 - Performed at the Apollo Theater 70th Anniversary Show with Herbie Hancock and Harry Connick Jr.
  • 2004 - Performed at the Latin Billboard awards with Alicia Keys
  • 2004 - Awarded the Latin Billboard award for Trumpet Evolution
  • 2005 - Released Live at the Blue Note, first live (CD/DVD) recording ever
  • 2006 - Nominated for Latin Billboard award for Live at the Blue Note
  • 2006 - Arturo Realizes his dream with the Grand Opening of the ARTURO SANDOVAL JAZZ CLUB at the Deauville Beach Resort on Miami Beach, FL.
  • 2006 - Is crowned the King of Carnival Miami
  • 2006 - Is invited to perform at the International Trumpet Guild
  • 2006 - Performed at the White House for the 20th anniversary celebration of the Thelonious Monk Institute.
  • 2006 - Is invited to perform at the Grand Opening celebration of the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts, Miami’s first and finest Performing Arts Center.

I’d say it is worth a trip to Old Town to check him out.
